SUMMER LIVING...FKA STYLE

JUNE 10, 2015

FKA's Cove House is featured among 17 of the most fabulous outdoor spaces in Austin, in the lastest issue of Austin Home Magazine.

The first thing visitors say when they enter this Lake Austin home is “How is this possible?” Located on a peninsula, the home is surrounded on two-and-a-half sides by water, and thanks to being built before zoning laws were changed, is perched tantalizingly close to the lake’s edge.

The key to this plan was a screened porch separated from the living room by 26-foot-wide sliding glass doors. At 30 feet long, the porch lent itself to two living spaces. On one side is a sitting area, furnished by Fern Santini of ABODE, where sofas nestling around a copper-clad fireplace evoke the primal joy of a campfire. On the other side is a hanging daybed, levitating eight inches off the ground and commanding all-encompassing water views. Naturally, here is where the awestruck visitors usually end up....

FKA'S ANN MARIE McCOLLUM IS SELECTED FOR AIA EMERGING PROFESSIONALS EXHIBITION by Furman + Keil Architects

FKA'S ANN MARIE McCOLLUM IS SELECTED FOR AIA EMERGING PROFESSIONALS EXHIBITION

MARCH 26, 2015

AUSTIN, TX - Furman + Keil Architects is proud to announce that one of their newest team members, Ann Marie McCollum, was recently selected for The American Institute of Architects, 2015 Annual Emerging Professionals Exhibition. The competition is an annual exhibition promoting the outstanding work of rising architectural professionals across North America. The exhibition is held at the AIA National headquarters in Washington, D.C., and is an opportunity for the nominees to bring exposure to their work and the firms they represent.

Ann Marie’s selected work is entitled Re-Interpretation Through Translation, a comprehensive investigation seeking to identify the notion of place, through the analysis, representation, measure, rationalization, translation, and re-interpretation of the rituals that occur in everyday life. Through personal experiences in different cities, a vast series of sketches, models, and drawings were developed as a set of tools of techniques and methodologies. These techniques helped develop a construct of an entirely new cultural landscape that would allow individuals to seek their identity, culture, sense of place, and sense of belonging through the notion of measurement that exists in the rituals of everyday life.

After graduating in May 2014 with her Master’s in Architecture from the University of South Florida, Ann Marie moved to Austin in search of a collaborative, design-focused architecture firm. Ann Marie joined Furman + Keil Architects in September 2014. Please join us in congratulating Ann Marie for her hard work and dedication!

DOGRUN RANCH FEATURED IN AUSTIN MONTHLY HOME, WINTER ISSUE by Furman + Keil Architects

DOGRUN RANCH FEATURED IN AUSTIN MONTHLY HOME, WINTER ISSUE

JANUARY 8, 2015

Austin Monthly Home sit downs with Gary Furman to discuss a ranch reimagined.

What would a rancher do?

It’s not quite the principle you’d expect to be behind a home boasting a swimming pool, marble countertops, smooth-as-silk cabinetry and acres of glass framing near panoramic views. But that’s precisely the question Gary Furman asked himself as he was designing the limestone house that sits perched atop a knoll in Spicewood.

“We were trying to capture the decision-making process of a rancher,” says Furman, the principal of Furman + Keil Architects. “And that’s doing the most straightforward thing with a material that makes the most sense.”

INSTANT CLASSIC: IRENE'S by Furman + Keil Architects

INSTANT CLASSIC: IRENE'S

DECEMBER 11, 2014

ELM Restaurant Group to Open New American Bar & Restaurant

On the heels of the announcement of forthcoming Italian concept ITALIC (Spring 2015), the team behind ELM Restaurant Group (24 Diner, Easy Tiger Bake Shop & Beer Garden, Arro) revealed today that they have another project in the works: Irene’s. The muse for this classic American bar and restaurant is the grandmother of partner Chad Gluckson, who describes the real-life Southern charmer as a “drinking, smoking, gambling woman with an immense heart and a keen understanding of true hospitality.”

Located in central Austin at 506 West Avenue (the former home of Joe’s Bar & Grill), Irene’s has the soul of an unpretentious dive bar but manages to keep a firm hand on service and a keen eye to hospitality. The workday begins with breakfast served at the counter window. Grab a thick slice of warm, buttered toast or a housemade cinnamon roll along with a cup of coffee (or even a pack of smokes, if you are so inclined), and meander back to the spacious patio nestled beneath massive pecan trees on the banks of Shoal Creek.

NORTH PEAK HOUSE AS CASE STUDY FOR AUSTIN ENERGY'S GREEN BUILDING PROGRAM

NOVEMBER 12, 2014

Austin Energy is leading the building industry to a sustainable future green building rating, education and professional development services.

The North Peak Residence, west of Austin, was designed to create a sustainable environment to raise a family, yet accommodate their changing needs over time. Applying principals recognized by Austin Energy Green Building (AEGB) for design and construction, the home went beyond basic “green” to “healthy.”  Achieving a 5-star AEGB rating, this house has been a laboratory for research, challenging conventional definitions of sustainable architecture and construction. Every product and procedure was carefully reviewed by the project team for its effect on indoor air quality and the environment. The finished home was built at or near the budget of comparable traditional construction projects.

Top Features:

  • Low emitting materials ensure indoor air quality
  • Reuse of driveways and pad-site reduce impact to the environment
  • Geothermal heat pump HVAC system for long-term performance
  • Passive solar design with multiple open air living spaces
  • Separate flex space unit provides for evolving lifestyles

COVE HOUSE FEATURED IN HOME DESIGN AUSTRALIA

    APRIL 16, 2014

When you consider the combination of this sublime setting and the lively, arty culture of the hip city of Austin, Texas, where the home is located, you have to wonder why one of these owners was reluctant to leave California. Especially as she is an artist herself, pottery and sculpture being her media, and the home sits across from Laguna Gloria Art Museum, an important element of Austin’s rich art scene.
